For some reason, learning through play is simply more fun outside, so outdoor play is built into each morning and afternoon’s activities. And, unless the conditions are just too severe for even our intrepid team to brave, we go out regardless. If it’s cold and rainy, we snuggle up in woollies, wellies and waterproofs, and get on with it, whatever the weather. The children love it!
Margaret McMillan* (quoted below) maintained that children need outdoor space as much as food and air, and we can’t help but agree. This philosophy is reflected in the design of our nursery, with each room opening onto its own garden, so no one’s ever left waiting inside for their turn.
*Margaret mcMillan worked in Bradford for several years. She campaigned for improved conditions for children and her work included research into the conditions faced by children. In Bradford she became a member of the schools board and was highly influential, leading to the cities education system being much improved as a result.
